A member from the audience is selected and lain across a table. A set of spikes is clearly seen underneath the table. A newspaper is unfolded and placed on top of the spectator’s waist and then a box is used to cover the spectator’s middle section. The spikes are raised from underneath the table, apparently penetrating the spectator, and can be seen protruding from the top of the box. The spikes are lowered, the box is removed, and the spectator is left unharmed. The newspaper is then shown with multiple spike holes in it, furthering the illusion that the spikes fully penetrated the spectator.
